Get over the hump on humpday with a beautiful after-work hike to Sunset Rock on Lookout Mountain. We will begin at the parking area just before the Nature Center, and hike approx. 2 miles. This is an uphill hike most of the way and has some significant elevation gain, so be prepared. I plan on doing this hike every Wednesday (weather permitting) for a while, so if you can't make this one, there's always next week!

We will meet at the parking area on Garden Rd, on the right just before getting to the Nature Center and Reflection Riding. Garden Rd is off Cummings Highway in Tiftonia. If you take the Brown's Ferry exit from I-24 to Cummings Hwy, Garden Rd will be on your right. If you're coming from downtown/St. Elmo, take Broad Street past Walgreen's and under the train overpass, and this becomes Cummings Hwy; Garden Rd will be on your left. If you need any assistance with directions, feel free to contact me via email. You can see a great map here:

The parking area is where the Kiddie Trail starts, which is where we will begin the hike.

Don, you and I may be the only ones actually on the hike but there are about 5 people planning to meet us at the bar between 7:30 and 8:30. I think I'm starting to figure out what this group is REALLY all about lol!

The parking area sits at 640' elevation. Sunset rock is 1,944' elevation. So, the elevation gain would be 1,304' precisely, for inquiring minds :) Source: http://www.trails.com/topom...

I wasn't a ranger! I was a trail crew leader :). It's amazing how much I have forgotten about these trails in the last 4 months!

If you are interested, I have uploaded a map of the Lookout Mountain trails which answers some questions. Look under the "More" tab at the top of the page and then "Files" and you will find it.

Sorry Trey....only the two legged type of horse (such as yourself) are allowed on that trail! :) All kidding aside, I do think there are some trails around there that do allow horses. Carla was a ranger there and knows all those Lookout trails well....check with her.

I was going to estimate 1200' so it is right in that ballpark

Teresa, a good guess would be approximately 1000' gain. If anyone has a topo please post.

Does anyone know what the elevation gain is on this trail?

Beautiful hike-still bout 3.5 inches of snow on the Gum Springs Trail. Excellent burgers, beer, conversation and cookies! at Blacksmith's afterward. I made some new friends, even Mya (my dog)made a friend with Kim's Cayenne!
    •  Thanks everybody for helping me get out to have fun!
    •  Was a great hike. Perfect for getting in shape. The view was worth every step!
