This outing is intended as a leisurely beginners hike. Though the following description may sound daunting, the hike should be well within the abilities of most able bodied persons.

The first section from Signal Point to the swinging bridge, is steep and rocky in places and can be a real ankle turner, so caution and good shoes are recommended. The second section is a wide and well groomed path which will take us up out of the ravine to the Rainbow Lake trailhead at Ohio Avenue. The hike up out of the ravine may be a little strenuous for some, but we will take our time as needed. There will be a short walk along the road to take us back to the Signal point parking lot.
There are several scenic overlooks and a large waterfall visible across the ravine.

This section of the Cumberland Trail starts at Signal Point, and is marked by white blazes on trees and rocks. It descends the cliffs by a series of steep paths and stairs, then approximately follows the contours until it reaches Rainbow Lake. In places it crosses areas of broken rocks, which need careful negotiation. The overlook, which is on a dangerous clifftop, gives spectacular views over the Tennessee River and adjacent woodlands. The trail passes above Rainbow Falls, but signs warn you that the route to the falls is hazardous. We will be returning from Rainbow Lake via the Ohio Avenue route.

Well I hadn't expected such a large group, but I'm glad to have you all along. Due to the size of our group, I would strongly encourage carpooling. We will be meeting at the Signal Point trailhead where the parking lot is often close to full on nice days. We can also park along the curb side above the parking lot and maybe squeeze a few onto the side of the road if need be. I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow. Should be a great day.

I don't know if I can handle the whole trip. Would anyone be willing to walk only half of it with me and go at a slower pace?

Are there any carpools being coordinated? If anyone wants to meet at Walmart garden center at the base of Signal Mtn at 11:30am I could drive. My corolla holds 5, 4 comfortably, including driver. I'm not bringing my dog. Please let me know if you want to carpool otherwise I will go straight to Signal Point.

Sally, There's a parking lot at Signal Point where we'll be meeting. It can get crowded in good weather so carpooling is not a bad idea. Bi-lo or Walmart parking lots at the base of Signal are good for a carpool convergence. If you've not been to Signal Mountain before, just google: "Signal Point TN 37377" for a basic map. If you need more specific directions let me know and I'll contact you directly.

Cool Chad. I have no problem whatsoever respecting peoples boundaries and I certainly do not want to be that "guy" who got dogs banned from the trail.

Felipe, I can't find any official statement prohibiting dogs from the park. I've taken my own, and have seen others do likewise. However, the trail is often narrow, so passing other (possibly dog phobic) hikers would require close encounters with canines. The short answer is yes, dogs are allowed. But, I would recommend keeping dogs on a leash and leading your dog off the trail to avoid passersby whenever possible. This way we can ensure that the park remains open to our 4 legged friends.
